‘Just look at him’: Liverpool fans fear season ahead after finding culprit for Sunderland equaliser

verpool supporters were quick to point the finger at Jeremie Frimpong after Sunderland cancelled out Kieran Morrison’s opener in Saturday’s pre-season friendly in Nashville, with many believing the Dutch full-back was at fault for the equalising goal.

The Reds had taken the lead through academy star Morrison before Sunderland hit back following a move down Liverpool’s right flank.

Frimpong was caught too high up the pitch, allowing Sunderland space to exploit before the visitors finished past Giorgi Mamardashvili to level the scores.

While pre-season results are rarely viewed as significant, Frimpong’s defensive positioning immediately became a major talking point among supporters watching the game.

One frustrated fan wrote: “Just look at Frimpong. That’s exactly what teams will target all season if he keeps defending like that.”

Another reacted: “Frimpong completely switched off. You can’t leave that much space, even in a friendly.”

A third supporter feared what lies ahead, posting: “If that’s our starting right-back defensively, we’re going to have a long season.”

Others, however, urged caution, reminding fans that the Dutch international is still adapting to a new tactical system under Andoni Iraola after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

One supporter argued: “It’s pre-season. These are exactly the mistakes you want players making now rather than in August.”

Another added: “People need to relax. Frimpong’s attacking qualities are why Liverpool signed him but defensive chemistry takes time.”

Although his pace, dribbling and creativity have never been questioned, Saturday’s equaliser shows the defensive adjustment he may still face in English football.
