Exclusive: Major suspension update after England U21 incident involving Liverpool star Elliott
UEFA are expected to impose a strong punishment as a warning to others after Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott found himself in a troubling incident, according to former referee Keith Hackett.
Elliott, 22, has been in fine form for England’s Under-21 side at the European Championship in Slovakia, shining in recent weeks. He scored in their 3-1 group-stage win over Czechia and added another goal in the 3-1 quarter-final victory over Spain on Saturday, 21 June.
However, the clash with Spain turned sour when tensions boiled over at the City Arena. Elliott was at the centre of a mass altercation after Spanish defender Rafa Marin grabbed him by the neck—an incident that saw Marin sent off, as reported by the Express.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett warned that both teams could face serious repercussions, and the Spain defender may receive an extended suspension. “When I was with the PGMOL, any contact with an opponent’s face or neck warranted a straight red,” he said. “UEFA will want to set a precedent here. A ban of around five matches is likely.”
Despite the controversy, Elliott is expected to be available for England’s semi-final showdown with the Netherlands on Wednesday, 25 June, and given his performances so far, he’s poised to play a key role again.
Meanwhile, Elliott’s club future remains uncertain. Commentator Ian Darke told Liverpool News 247 (14 June) that the former Fulham man may need to leave Liverpool due to limited opportunities under new manager Arne Slot. Reports suggest Wolves are among the clubs eager to secure a deal ahead of the 2025/26 season.
