The pursuit of Florian Wirtz’s transfer is still ongoing. Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg suggested over the weekend that things could progress quickly in the coming days, with a medical potentially scheduled this week. However, certain factors have prevented a breakthrough.
Monday was a public holiday in Germany for Pfingstmontag, which might have caused some delays in advancing the deal. Additionally, Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have not yet agreed on a fee for the 22-year-old.
Liverpool is expected to submit a fourth bid for Wirtz, reportedly around €140m (£118m) with add-ons (according to Bild), but this is still below the €150m (£126.4m) that Leverkusen is demanding.
As per Gregg Evans’ report for The Athletic on Tuesday, “negotiations are ongoing” between the involved parties, but Liverpool has made it clear they are unwilling to meet Leverkusen’s asking price for the playmaker. They had hoped their most recent offer of €134m (£113.4m) would be sufficient, but no breakthrough has been reached.
The Wirtz transfer remains in a delicate state. While it feels like the pursuit could soon conclude one way or the other, the outcome still hangs in the balance.
Lewis Steele from the Daily Mail recently indicated that Leverkusen is holding out for £118m, a price Liverpool might be willing to meet. Despite the delays, there is still a strong possibility the transfer will happen, which is keeping fans hopeful despite the tension caused by the standoff.
It’s understandable that Leverkusen would push for the best possible deal for their star player, but since Wirtz has expressed a clear desire to move to Anfield, there may be room for compromise. If the transfer is blocked because of the club’s hard stance, it could alienate Wirtz, and Leverkusen may ultimately decide that accepting Liverpool’s best offer and reinvesting in their squad is the best option.
This transfer was never expected to be as smooth as Jeremie Frimpong’s, whose release clause was easily met by Liverpool. It will require more patience for a breakthrough, but there is still confidence it will eventually happen.
